Larry Corvi farewell message line

I have setup a special voice message line for saying farewell to Larry Corvi.

I am sure he would love to hear from all his Rotary friends.  I will create a CD of all the messages, for him to take to on his journey.  This will be something he can share with his friends and family, and just reflect on.

It is just plain voicemail, but this temporary number is a long distance call.

To leave your message call for Larry please call,  (512) 827-0505 ext:9340

Muskogee Recognized at District Conference

A good (and educational) time was had by all!

Daniel Miller, Melissa Branch, Catherine Clay, Earnie Gilder, and Travis Reeves (photo at left) were five of 16 Muskogee Rotarians who attended the Rotary District 6110 District Conference September 24 – 25.  Others attending included Dr. David Jones, Nita McClellan, Debbie Cooper, Larry Hoffman, Dan Allen, Sam Fowler, Renee Fredrick, Hershel McBride, Kevin Stewart, Lynsie Laughlin, and Melinda Murphy.

The Medical Supplies Network recognized Muskogee Rotary through videos, verbal presentation and the MSNI news letter for its $8,500 contribution to establish a Rehabilitation Clinic in Haiti.  The clinic focuses on the care of Haitians who suffered amputations as a result of the January 2010 earthquake.

Muskogee delivered its contribution of 159 pairs of shoes and many pairs of socks to the Shoes for Orphan Souls campaign.

The club received the RI International President’s citation for exemplary action and service during the 2009-10 year – Hershel’s year as president.

Dan Allen received a personal citation from the District Governor for his contributions to the district effort to implement, train and troubleshoot the new DaCdb database.

And a club-created exhibit that highlighted use of the proceeds of Party in the Park, and promoted the April 16, 2011 Party in the Park, was on display in the hospitality room throughout the conference.

Family Medicine in Ecuador

Dr. Mark Nelson spoke at the Rotary Club of Muskogee’s noon meeting at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame on Sept. 23. Dr. Nelson, who is on a brief visit home, discussed his work with a Family Medicine clinic in Ecuador.

The family medicine clinic is a community-based practice setting whose providers take on the role of family physician.  They provide care for all family members of all ages, in clinic and in hospital, as well as preventive and other public health services to communities.  The clinic partners with church and community-based ministries and foundations that work with medically-underserved families in order for the clinic to be a no cost or low cost, high-quality medical home for those families.

In addition, the clinic helps new physicians further develop their practice skills through residency training.  Eight residents are selected each year to join this three-year program.  The clinic provides these residents an opportunity to advance their training and expertise in an environment that models and teaches high-quality family medicine and service to the community.  The residents take responsibility for all aspects of healthcare for the families they serve at the clinic during their three years of training thus allowing them to see the long-term effects and outcomes of the healthcare concerns which they treat.

Dr. Nelson, who has committed himself to this work, attended medical school at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his residency in Family Medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth. He earned his Master’s in Public Health at the University of Texas at Houston and received a diploma in Tropical Medicine at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in England.
